Microshifting: Because it makes sense!
I’ve learned over the years in balancing marketing deadlines, consulting calls, and the everyday realities of being a woman in today’s world that productivity doesn’t always happen in neat, eight-hour blocks. Life rarely fits into that mold. What does work, and what has given me both freedom and focus, is the idea of microshift work. I just didn’t have a cute term for it until recently.
Finding Balance
Some mornings I’m brimming with creativity, ready to draft campaign copy or sketch out a client’s brand story. Other times, I need shorter bursts, a 30-minute call, a quick edit, a thoughtful email, before shifting gears to family, a personal commitment, or simply catching my breath.
Instead of fighting against the imbalance, microshift allows me to manage it. It’s not about doing less; it’s about doing what matters most, in the windows of time when we’re at our best.
Why it Resonates with Women in Marketing and Consulting
Women wear a lot of hats. The memes are real. We are often expected to parent like we don’t have a career, and work like we don’t have a family. We play strategist, mentor, and caregiver without a minute in between. Microshifts allow us to move between those roles without guilt. I don’t work 8-5. Probably never will again. I sometimes work 7-7:30, 9-11, 12-1, 1:30-1:45, 2-6.
I’ve found that this approach doesn’t just protect my energy; it amplifies it. It keeps me present with clients, sharp in my storytelling, and grounded in my personal life.
A More Human Way to Work
What I love most about microshift scheduling is that it feels human. It acknowledges that women’s lives are messy, layered, and dynamic. It gives permission to pause, to pivot, and to return with renewed focus.
At Bluebirds Marketing, we see this not as a trend but as a philosophy: work that adapts to women, rather than women forcing themselves to adapt to outdated structures.
Microshifts remind me that success isn’t measured by hours logged but by impact made. This allow me to show up fully…for my clients, my colleagues, and myself. And in a world that often demands we stretch ourselves thin, that feels like a radical, refreshing way to thrive.
